Each year the AHG troop looks to serve on Veterans Day, this year attending the Monarch Grove Assisted Living Home to visit with some veterans. Magan said that all went well, besides one little girl almost tearing up because she was late, then tearing up again when there were no more grommets for her grandfather. Anabelle led the girls in some patriotic songs they sang for the ones that attended, then they each had some time to talk with those living here.
Ruby said that one guy was really nice, but he could not hear anything they said. She really liked one lady that was in the Coast Guard, and told them about her service, then showed them the proper way to salute.
And while we did not have grommets for all, AHG troop 1720 usually retires 2 to 3 flags each campout, and the metal grommets from those flags are kept, cleaned, and then presented to Veterans. The words that we read around the campfire, and that we provide to the veterans are this..."These
metal grommets, which held the U.S. flag as it flew, did not burn away in the
fire of our retirement ceremony. They
were found in the cold ashes the morning after, cleaned, and are presented to
you, our veteran, because you also have come through the fire as you have
served our country."
