This year Magan got some help planning this event from Tiffany and Amanda, so it wasn't as crazy as in previous years, but still a day that has so much planning that we are all just trying to survive the day. Our theme was Napoleon Dynamite, which prompts either excitement to see the characters, or looks of confusion at what 80s cult we have elected to join. I was Pedro, with the only line I could remember about "vote for me and wildest dreams coming true", Davis with his mustache was a perfect Uncle Rico, and Sam I think brought back his smile from his early elementary years to perfect the confused Napoleon look. Noel had the trademark Deb side pony tail and fanny pack, while Magan had the glittery shirt and poster soliciting your vote for Summer.
This was a first for me to have only the mustache, and it lasted for a full week before I let all grow back in. Magan had originally planned to be LaFawnda, with me as Kip...but with a special call to a couple of dark-skinned friends, we elected not to voluntarily get cancelled on social media. Magan had some eggs in a jar on the table, Tina the llama, and lots and lots of other items from the movie. Again, the crowd either likes it alot or just doesn't know what is going on.
Anabelle dressed up with friends of Strawberry Shortcake, she was the one in orange. And Ruby worked with Ms. Lisa for weeks to put together their theme of Rapunzel. And their work began on 9/21, a month prior to this event building one of the best trunks at the event. I will share a few of the snippets from her work with Ms. Lisa...Ruby quote of the day "I like hanging out with friends that drive because they can take me places"...Ruby asked Lisa to send pics to us because she wanted us to see all the work they did...Lisa said "She did the snuggly duckling soooo good!!!!"...And lastly from Lisa "Will you tell Ruby that I enjoyed doing this with her. She brought the magic".
It was again perfect weather for this event, and even with some difficult parking arrangements to begin with, there was plenty of room, and the kids were able to get all the treats and then we all had a good pot luck meal, and finally some carnival games. But at the end, a winner had to be declared. The voting has always been tough with sometimes a large family like the Contornos taking a large majority of the electoral votes for the best trunk. Did enough people even know who Napolean Dynamite even was? Magan called everyone together. And with our megaphone, she announced 2nd place going to the Alien trunk, which many saw as the front runner. Who would be crowned champion and take home the golden pumpkin? First Place goes to .... THE RAPUNZEL TRUNK!!! Yeah, everyone cheered as Ruby and Lisa stepped forward to get their medal and trophy. Little Ruby's smile with that pumpkin is my favorite. She is a hard worker, and with all the time they put in, I think it was well deserved.
And then it was over. Sam and Noel left going separate ways home. Me and Davis began the long long process of taking all the tables and setting them back up at church. Mom and Belle took the load home and started getting stuff stored for next year. And that cute smile on that little girl with the trophy remained even as her eyes closed for the night. Before she went to sleep, she told me about how the other little girls also in princess dresses would come up to talk to her seeing the "big" princess. I don't know how many more days I may get with a little girl in a princess dress, but I am so glad for some Granny magic from this summer at Disney that helped her become a princess one more time.
Now at our home next to the Rook Tournament trophy is another prize, the Golden Pumpkin. And with these memories of another fun night in Chelsea, I know that I also must have voted for Pedro, for all my wildest dreams have come true.
