Tonight's lesson was from "Opie the Birdman" in season 3 of the Andy Griffith show. Opie is having a grand old time with his new slingshot. His father warns him to be careful with it, but when he inadvertently kills a bird, he is genuinely heartbroken. He reluctantly confesses to Andy what he has done but the real problem is that there are now three motherless hatchlings in the nest. Opie decides that he's going to raise them and he meticulously takes care of them, but eventually comes to the realization that he will soon have to let them go free.
Rick May led our discussion after we ate some pizza then watched the show. There is a lesson around dealing with consequences, when perhaps we did not mean to make that decision. There is a lesson around what type of punishment fits the crime, and how does Andy handle it. And some thoughts on letting go when the time is right. The show ends with one of those amazing scenes...just Opie and Andy out on the front lawn...Opie Taylor: The cage sure looks awful empty, don't it, Pa? Andy Taylor: Yes, Son, it sure does. But don't the trees seem nice and full?
I don't know of any other show that can hold a large group of young folks captive like this one still can...and as silly as it is, it is great to hear the laughs of young and old with whatever Barney is doing in that scene. Hopefully the kids enjoyed this lesson, and I am glad they had some time before school starts back to get together with their church friends and play some games. After the lesson, there was a table playing Goat Loads, a table playing Farkle, and another table playing Sequence.
