Dad's Birthday

Happy number 42 to my wonderful husband.  He makes us laugh, takes us on fun road trips, and probably the most beautiful man I have ever seen.  He also writes all of these blogs himself, capturing our family in a most wonderful way.  He makes me want to be a better woman.  - Magan (as captured by the previously mentioned beautiful man)

Ok, so memories are not as good anymore, so what happened on this day.  I got to eat some amazing vegetable soup that Judy made.  Magan bought me my favorite cookie cake, even though it had a large piece missing, that may or may not have been a part of my lunch earlier in the day.  The kids sang "Hattin Burten Dayton Tooten Mein".  And I loved to hear little Ruby cackle as I tried and tried to blow out that trick candle Magan bought.  And Magan bought me the national park socks that I was hoping to get and strongly suggesting.  I know have the Rocky Mountains, Mesa Verde, Smokey Mountains, Grand Canyon, Sequoia, and Yosemite.  My dad knows that I am going to try and get "the whole collection".

AHG Activities

American Heritage Girls has been very busy already this month.  We had our first awards ceremony where the girls earned some program patches.  Anabelle's explorer group worked on Graphic Design with Sarah Beth's mom.  Ruby took a hike with the Tenderhearts working on the Outdoor frontier badge.

On this hike with the tenderhearts, Magan was surprised at Ruby's resourcefulness.  She had brought snacks for not just her, but also for all of her friends.  And what did she have for before they ate the snacks...hand sanitizer.  They also started getting bit by mosquitos, and again, Ruby had bug spray for everyone.  And after one of the girls starting complaining that she was so thirsty, Ruby looked at Magan, and offered her a bottle of water from her Junior Ranger backback.

Ruby also has lead the prayer at the opening troop ceremony.  And both girls attended the National day of service with Grace Klein.  Looking forward to the campout in October!

Back in Tuscaloosa

And we are back in Tuscaloosa, once again helping with some of the thousands of folks wanting to park as close to Bryant Denny as they can.  At the beginning of the season, I quickly signed up for the Southern Miss game as it is an obvious 11:00AM game at the first of the season, and I would not have to be here for long.  And guess what, they decided that would be a good one for a 6:30PM kickoff, and Sam and I had to be in Tuscaloosa at our post at 6:45AM.  And we sat and sat till kickoff.  It was originally just going to be me at the game, but plans allowed for Sam to join me, and I loved getting to spend the day with him.  We are much alike, and just hanging out without having to talk much is sometimes perfect for both of us.

We did get a chance to teach a wood carving merit badge to two of the younger boys during a slow period at lunch.  I showed them some of the knives and safety, and Sam walked them thru the Santa Claus pencils with 4 stop cuts.  And Sam got to walk over and be at the other parking deck crew for a little bit, but mostly we hung out at our gate and tried not to both nap at the same time.

And since we had stayed this long already, Sam and I decided to go on into the game, where we arrived almost at the end of the 1st quarter, and Bama was already up 21-0.  I think it was 42-0 at halftime when we decided to head on back to Birmingham.  It was really cool to see the amazing light show they put on at the stadium.  It is like being in a rock concert.

A Sunday Celebration

So instead of writing something new, just sharing the message I sent to our church on a wonderful joyous day when Sam made that great decision to be obedient to the Gospel Message!...

"I just wanted to reach out and thank all of you in our Chelsea Church Family!  It was a wonderful day for our family, and as Mr. Flynn told me on my first Wednesday night at Chelsea..."This group is different, we REALLY ARE just a big family".  And you guys are...you are our family.  So many of you guys have been such a good influence on Sam, and I am so thankful for each of his teachers, each of his mentors, the preacher that initiated a crazy love for Sneaky Pete breakfasts in him, and each one of you that reach out and just speak with him on Sunday mornings.

Janie Hornsby tells the story of me taking Sam out of the middle school band room when we were worshipping there...He was acting up, and with no cry room, I was just heading outside with him.  I don't remember it well, but Janie says he kept screaming on the way out "HELP ME, HELP ME"

As he got older and praying each night in bed before sleep, I'll never forget him asking me "Dad, who is that fire lady that we are praying for?  The one that we get to sing with at her house".   Sam, are you talking about Mrs. Burns?  haha...the firelady.

Anyway, today has put me in memory lane, and I just wanted to share how much all of you guys mean to me and Magan, Sam and all the rest of our children.

And I want you guys to keep reaching out and engaging with these kids.  Ask them how they are doing?  Ask them what was their favorite part about bible class.  Just ask them about the toy they are playing with.  Terry taught a lesson on Bridging the Gap between our young folks and us older folks...and I truly see that in so many of you guys, and it has been wonderful to see the relationships that our young ones have with so many of you guys.  Keep it up!

Thank you all for being our family,

Scott"

Whitewater with Boy Scouts

While none of you care too much, I will rant about these borders below...it is because of blogspot accepts only normal file pictures (jpg and jpeg).  Those are the norm.  But no, not for apple, they have their own file designation and when people send them to me, I have to take a snapshot of the image so I can have it in the normal file type.  Argh...if anyone would like to help me with this, please go into your apple settings and turn the images back to .jpeg files.  Thank you!

The girls had enjoyed this same whitewater adventure the previous month, and now was our turn with the boy scouts.  Sam and Davis had both heard me say I don't want to be an an adventurous boat, my swimming skills are subpar.  So when selecting a boat crew, they found other guys and crew for their boats, and I was left in the Old Goat boat with two other dads and one of our newest scouts.  The trip down was fun as always with three of the guys I have led since 2nd Grade (Cole, Brandon, and Sam).

And I have pictures for all three boats we divided up in, but the stories are mainly from mine...at the river, we were introduced to our guide, Otter.  She was very interesting, and it started out in conversation with our questions to her about how often she goes down the river.  I was thinking of this as a per day or per week question, yet her response was "Oh, I am just an office worker".  That is where Shawn Rumsey and I shared our first shared glance of "perhaps we are being punk'd".  But she much later shared that she used to be on the river much more, but only recently moved to the office.  Perhaps she had some time on this day during her lunch break.

We had some interesting moments with our newest scout and his dad, and some learning scout moments that pulled them both from the front of the boat, and put me and Shawn up front for the rest of the trip.  And while up there paddling ALOT, as it was only me and Shawn paddling primarily...we heard Otter yell 3 strokes, then 3, then 3 more, then we never stopped paddling pretty much the whole river journey.  Anyway, later we learned about geese that were all along the river (Chattahoochie...We were in Columbus, GA...did I forget to say that?), and Otter told us how viscous these geese were, even one of them biting her before.  Then she told us how she once had a pet goose.  Now this was intriguing, or perhaps I just wanted a small break from the screams of 3 more...3 more, so I asked "So, how in the world do you get a pet goose".  Here is where I expected a story both to satisfy my intrigue, to remove the burden on my arms.  Her response was as quick as the office worker reply... "You catch it"...that's it!  Then "3 more".  So on we paddled.

Only later in a fun area along the river they call the lazy river section, where we got to get out of the boat and float along...did Shawn come up beside me and help me realize the humor in her response...He started laughing and then as we both started thinking about her response..."You catch it"...and perhaps in our delirium from having to paddle 3 times more than anyone else on the river today...we both lost it...I don't think either of us could think of anything else without cracking up for the remainder of this day.

After a long process of walking back to our vehicles for clothes, then walking back to the outfitter to change, then back to our vehicles to get to our campsite in Auburn.  We all looked at the radar in Auburn and made a gametime decision that we had our fun, and did not want to camp that night in pouring thunderstorms.  So we headed back to Chelsea...we cooked all our campfood at the meeting on Monday, and we avoided a nasty night of camping.  And overall, if we learned nothing else, we learned how you can have a pet goose.  You simply catch it.
